The charming girl next to me is my 'third' roomate. Her name is Rahmi Hidayati. I called her 'Amink', I don't know why I called her with that stupid name. As a fact that name is very appropriate and rememberable. She came from Lake Maninjau. That place take 4 hours from Padang. Amink has different major with me. She is in Education Administration Major and I'm in English Education Major. She is so good and so kind to me also the best roommate I've met.

Using Observation Method in
Generating Senior
High School Student Ideas in
Writing a Descriptive Text

What will happen if people cannot
write? Absolutely, this case makes the way of people thinking is not be able to
develop it objectively and efficiently. Moreover, they will illiterate and
cannot reading. Those reasons are standing for people who could not reach the
education. English as an international language in the world has language skill
that substances of listening, reading, speaking, writing. That is why writing
is one of the important language skills. According to Brown (1994:328) a
production method for learning, reinforcing, or testing grammatical concepts is
sometime used in writing. It means that all of thought, feeling, idea, and
opinion are combining into one form which is expressed by a writer to make a
great writing.
The
ability to write effectively in English is more important in the global
community because it is used in technology, especially social link. It is
connecting people from different countries to keep interaction each other
eventhought they bad in speaking English. Therefore, the ability to write in
English language is really helpful and becoming widely recognized as an
important skill for education, business, and personal activity. As a result,
most of the teachers teach writing as an interesting subject in order to
motivate students to be a good writer.
The students who love writing is
exactly love reading, the students who love reading is probably does not love
writing yet, and the students who does
not love reading usually cannot writing well. Graham (2007:3) defines that
teenager who does not gain knowledge of to write well face many problems. This
case always happens in each school in the world. Many problems found in
student’s writing. When a teacher asks her students to write, they usually try
to find the excuses that make them can go out from their class. Additionally,
these students sometime wasting much time of writing, especially when they
starting to write. Based on that case, writing seems like a subject which
should be avoided for them. Somehow, the students can finish their writing but,
it is generally monotonous and uninteresting. Most of teachers already use many
ways to make their students to do not hate writing and make it turn into the attractive
subject. Unfortunately, these ways still does not working well.
The aim of writing is to communicate
a massage. Therefore, the students make a good paragraph, essay, or text which
is instead of message as clear as possible to the reader. Descriptive text is
one genre from kinds of text. The students cannot be able to generate their
ideas in writing, especially for writing descriptive text. The senior high
school student’s writing ability is entirely different with its school below
it. These students can writing more well because they have many experiences. In
contrast, they have many experiences but they are not interested and motivated
in writing. One way that can solve those problems is by using natural approach
method. So, using natural approach method has some good advantages in
generating senior high school students’ ideas in writing a descriptive text.
Teaching English is not easy. The teachers have to
teach four English language skills which are included of Speaking, Listening,
Reading, and Writing. In writing, most of students usually do not like it for
the reason that they think that it is hard and frustrating. This is one of teaching
writing problems that faced intended for teachers. To find out the resolution,
they have to implementation many kinds of methods. Disappointingly, it did not
cure and motivated the students within writing. Due to that observation method
is appropriate in generating senior high school student ideas mainly writing a
descriptive text.
Tarmudi (2012) mentions, observation
come from Latin which means “see” and “concern”. Observation is using in an
activity which concerns it accurately, the phenomena that appears is written,
and that a phenomenon is connected with both of aspect within it. Other author Page
(2010) defines that Observation
is a realistic research tool which provides precious sources of information in
conditions of others people's improvement, communications and behaviors. So,
when a teacher asking her students to write a descriptive text, this method
will help them easier to write. It has a reason that they get more concentrate
and inspiration because of the object is real and can catch some of their senses;
seeing, hearing, and smelling.
If the students do writing in
outdoor of class, they will feel fresh and free to write a descriptive text.
These students are not in imagination world anymore, but they are in the real
world. This means they can feel what they see straightforwardly and faithfulness.
Thus, using observation method can enrich and generate student’s idea, make the
students do writing easily, and make them more fun in writing.
The
first advantage of using observation method is that can help senior high school
students’ problem to enriching and generating their idea. Primarily, these
students have ability in writing well; however, they lack of expressed the
ideas, spelling, correct grammar, and diction to arrange then write them down
to a paper clearly. Without came up the ideas they will take a long time and
even waste their time to think. In many cases, the students written are less
quality. By using
observation method, a student’s mind is capable toward open widely.
Inspiration
does not always come easily. Students need more concentration while they do
writing. The overcrowded class is not effective for to do writing. Observation
method becomes visible to generate their idea. Classroom atmosphere gives the
students inflexibility to enrich their idea. They feel bored stressed out by
time to time when start to writing. So, when the students go to go out from
their class, they will feel different by different impression. As a result,
they get more inspiration by visiting wonderful place to write a descriptive
text.
To come up more idea, the students
need more concentration. That is a reason why most of the students hate
writing. They cannot think effectively because they cannot concentration
properly. Thus, the way to make them concentration in writing is by doing
activity that they like a lot. Observation method will create these students
more enjoyable to do writing. This method is approach the object directly and
then they will start to write based on what they see. In fact, at what time
they see the object directly, certainly many of ideas will came up from their
mind. As a result, these students can make a good descriptive text by those
great ideas.
When the students get a task about
writing usually they think that it is really hard to do it. Then, they would
not start to do that task before the dead line came nearly. After that, they
worry about it because they have limited time to do and finish it as soon as
possible. This case is not only occurring to senior high school student, but
also to all levels of schools’ student. Brown (1994:325) states that the good information
is that, given suitable stretches of time and developing well-organized process
for achieving the last product can indeed by became a “good” writer. This means
that the students as a writer should use their quality time to produce a
writing. Lack of ideas always became a reason of it. This is a simple problem,
although they think that it is a big problem. It caused of when a student in
fidgety thought he cannot concentration to do his assignments. He needs
something to refresh his mind and make him relax. Some of methods which his
teacher has practical did not solve it. As a result, observation method
preserves to answer that case because the nature place will reduce the
students’ stress and give them some relax. Trough this method can return their
concentration and finish their writing.
Observation method also can make the
students do writing easily. If they lack of idea, absolutely they feel that
writing is difficult. Writing a descriptive text is not really difficult.
However, if these students cannot generate their ideas it can be. In writing a
descriptive text technical, it provides readers with precise details about the
physical, composition, appearance, or features of a subject. Accordingly, when
the observation method is applied, student can write a text without difficulty.
For example, a teacher asks her students to write a descriptive text about
water boom in Padang Panjang. What can the students do if there are some of
students in that class never visit it. Enormously, they do not know what things
that should they write. Then, they will anxiety and worry to write. As a fact,
there are only few students who know how to finish the task that their teacher
gave before.
Based on that case, if that teacher
can bring her students to visit the object and asks them to write directly, the
students who never visit it will be able to write that text as well as
possible. Also, these students can write the descriptive text about water boom
Padang Panjang more detail and accurately. The readers can more understand,
enrich the knowledge, and feel as if in that place which the students told in
their text. Scholes, Comley, and Peritz (2001:122) define that the twin
problems (choice and combination) of descriptive writing can be solved in the
same mode. A point of view about the
object being described is must be had by a writer. For that reason, using
observation method is really helpful to solve the problem if the students faced
difficulty in writing.
The students like to do the activity
that their crazy about it. Thus, observation method makes them feel happy and
did not worry about writing. A teacher should feel what her students feeling.
She has to know what her students like, what activity that make them crazy
about, and keep their student in a happy mood. So, when the students study
writing, they will feel cheerful and glad with a teacher who knows what they
feel. Moreover, if a teacher asks her students to write a descriptive text by
using observation method, they can make it easily. It has a reason that to
describe an object which they have to write is already in of their eyes.
The last advantage of using
observation method makes the students more fun in writing. Generally, the
students usually bored with the same routine activities and same place where
they study for each semester they follow. Many fall into this pattern because
constantly irregular attention and multitasking ease the pain of doing something
they hate in the first place. To reduce this feeling, the observation method
can bring them out to see the sightseeing place. It feels like this method
throws some joys into the students’ tears. They will be capable of taste a
little bit fun from their stress in writing.
Most
of people state that writing such as a boring routine. In addition, some
students are not patient enough for enjoy the learning English process. Principally,
learning English cannot be instant, but it is need a long process. As a good
teacher, this teacher of course will feel worry about their students who would
want to write. For that reason, most of teachers will find out the method which
is suitable to arrange their students want to write. The boring situation makes
them get stress of study and lazy to write easily. Writing needs an energy and
brain to think. If these students do not breakfast before go to school, utterly
they cannot do their activities that need energy and though. It caused of
writing need a hand, and hand will need energy instead of the body. So the
energy needs a power which gets it from doing a breakfast.
Somehow,
the method which has applied by a teacher is does not work well. The students
usually like the method that consist of games, stories, and study outdoor. So,
a teacher has to focus on that method. One of many methods can get solution
from that problem is observation method. This method is almost same with study
outdoor. In fact, the students love to study in new place where different with
their class. It makes them enjoyable by visiting that place. Certainly, if
these students are in good mood, of course they feel that writing is fun.
In
order to make more understandable about using observation method, these are two
examples of descriptive texts in the different topic. These topics of
descriptive text are truly different. One of the texts tells about Jatim Park,
and the other one is about the amazing Taj Mahal in India.
Jatim Park
For
people in East Java, Jatim Park may have been heard many times as it is one of
the famous tourism object in East Java province. Jatim Park offers a recreation
place as well as a study center. Jatim Park is located at Jl. Kartika 2 Batu,
East Java. To reach the location is not too difficult because the object is
only 2, 5 kilos meters from Batu city. This Jatim Park tourism object is about
22 hectares width.
Visitor can enjoy at least 36 kinds of facilities which can attract them as well as give new knowledge. Just after the pass gate, the visitors will find an interesting view of ‘Galeri Nusantara’ area. This study offering continues to step on ‘Taman Sejarah’ area, which contains of miniature temple in East Java like Sumberawan temple, customhouse of Kiai Hasan Besari Ponorogo and Sumberawan Statue.
The other facility which is able to be enjoyed is ‘Agro Park’ area. It presents crop and rareness fruits, animal diorama which consists of unique animals that have been conserved, and supporting games like bowling, throw ball, scooter disco, etc
Jatim Park is suitable for family and school recreation. The recreation area sites offer precious tour and can used as alternative media of study.

The Amazing Taj Mahal in India
Taj
Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world. It was built by a
Muslim Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his dear wife at Agra.
Taj Mahal is a Mausoleum that houses the grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal. The mausoleum is a part of a vast complex comprising of a main gateway, an elaborate garden, a mosque (to the left), a guest house (to the right), and several other palatial buildings. The Taj is at the farthest end of this complex, with the river Jamuna behind it.
The Taj stands on a raised, square platform (186 x 186 feet) with its four corners truncated, forming an unequal octagon. The architectural design uses the interlocking arabesque concept, in which each element stands on its own and perfectly integrates with the main structure. It uses the principles of self-replicating geometry and a symmetry of architectural elements.
Its central dome is fifty-eight feet in diameter and rises to a height of 213 feet. It is flanked by four subsidiary domed chambers. The four graceful, slender minarets are 162.5 feet each. The central domed chamber and four adjoining chambers include many walls and panels of Islamic decoration.
Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river.

In conclusion, this paper has discussed
the using of observation method in generating senior high school student’s
ideas in writing a descriptive text. Some related theories have been presented
in some different parts. That is deal with how the using of observation method
can improve the motivation of students to write, and the other is how is how
the using of observation method the can improve student’s ability in writing a
descriptive text. In order to show the relationship between writing a
descriptive text by using observation method, it has been discussed through
examples that also have been provided. Thus, observation method is really functional
in order to generate and enrich the senior high school student ideas, can make
student’s easier to do writing, and make them more fun in making a descriptive text.

Cornelly and her step brother, Tolliver, went to South Carolina at the end of
January. It approved on page 1:
“But
I had some jobs in the East, so here I was, driving trough South Carolina with my sort-of brother Tolliver in the
passenger seat.”
In fact, Harper’s mother was married
by Tolliver’s father. Later on, her mother passed away and Tolliver’s father
was somewhere after gotten out of jail previous year. Harper’s real father was
still in white-collar crimes.
Harper was called to solve the case
about ghost activity of a couple of house in Charleston. They thought that
there were any bodies in the walls or flooring. Clearly, those bodies were
three babies in the narrow back yard. It was quite clear, and Harper could not
name the cause of the death. This was argued on page 2:
“The
answer was clear: no. But there were bodies in the narrow back yard. There were
three of them, all babies. I didn’t know what that meant. They’d died so soon
after birth that they hadn’t had much conscious for me to tap into, so I hadn’t
been able to name the cause of the death, which is usually quite clear. But the
Charleston homeowners had been thrilled with the result, especially after an
archeologist dug up the mugger remains the tiny bodies. They would dine out on
the dead babies for the next decade. They’d handed me a check without
hesitation.”
As a fact, Harper and Tolliver were spending their
time on the road since they graduated from senior high school. They saved the
money from that job to buy a house around Dallas closed to their aunt’s house.
Actually, when Harper was fifteen was struck by a
bolt of lightning in Texarkana. Then, she had a spiderweb of the red on part of
her body and her right leg has period of weaknesses. Sometime her right hand
was shaking, had headache, could saw and found dead people.
Usually, Harper and Cornelly booked one room for
them because they had no enough money. When she was in the motel in Dorraville
she saw a mother with her three children there, but she pretended did not see
them.
Harper was called by the sheriff of
Knott Country, Sandra Rockwell in her office. This sheriff told a case and want
Harper could solve it. It was about missing boys in that country and their
bodies could not find. Sandra Rockwell argued that those boys were buried in
somewhere.
It
could see in page 11-12:
“She
seemed to relax at my frankness. “Okay, then, cards on the table,” She took a
deep breath. “ For the past five years, boys have been going missing in this
country. It’s up to six boys now. When I say ‘boys’, I mean in the fourteen- to
eighteen-year-old range. Now, kids that ages are prone to runaways, we’d be
okay with that, as okay as you can be.”
We
nodded.
“But these
particular boys, it’s just no one can believe they would runaway. And in this
time, surely some hunters or bird watcher or hiker would have found a body or
two if they killed themselves or met with some accident in the wood”.
They are in different school and
missing two in the fall, three in the spring, and one in the summer, but none
in the winter maybe it cause of the condition of the weather. Sandra Rockwell
guessed that they were killed by the same person and then buried them
somewhere.
After that, Tolliver asked about the
location of a lake or a river around there. It caused of Harper ever solve the
case that missing people were found in the river. Then, Sandra Rockwell took a map and
explained that some of the victim’s thing where found. The oldest boy is Jeff
McGraw, sixteen years old. His grandmother, Twyla Cotton, spent much money to
look for him. She said that Jeff never run away like the police said, he just
had no reason to go. Jeff’s cell phone was found on the Madison road. Now, she
hopefully could see him again, even just scattered bones.
Twyla
Cotton drove her Cardillac, Harper and Tolliver sat on the passenger seat. They
went to each place to identify Jeff where is. It started to his school, town
landmark, and followed Harper instinct to the local cemetery, the freshest
grave.
Harper
closed her eyes and tried to find the victims and walked into the yard of the
old house. Dead people around there gave signal to her. She tried to speak,
choked and gasped. Then Harper was counting and said eight. It approved in page
31:
“I moved six
feet northwest. “Here, too.” I said.
“He’s in pieces?”
“There
more than one body,” Tolliver told her.
I held my hands
up to sharpen my focus. I turned again, more slowly, my eyes closed, my hands
raised, counting.
“Eight,” I said.
“Oh, my Lord on
heaven,” Twyla said. She sat down heavily on an old stamp. “I’m going to call
the police”.
Sandra
Rockwell came to Harper and asked about the victim in that place. Then Harper
explained it, but she still felt headache. There were eight bodies there. Each
of body already marked by placed the stuck of flag by Tolliver before. Then,
the two deputies, Dave and Hurry recovered the bones. It could see on page 35:
“A
little before eleven o’clock Dave and Harry, the two deputies, uncovered the
first bones.”
Sheriff Rockwell forced Harper to
explained how they death and who was the killer. Unfortunately, Harper could not
answer it yet because she still in pure condition at that time and could not
thought deeply by using her instinct. After that, Harper and Tolliver went to
their motel to pack up their stuff. Suddenly, Sandra Rockwell went to their
motel, knocked their door and stated that Harper was right, all boys were
there, and even a couple extra.
Tolliver
asked Harper to leave Doraville as soon as possible, because he did not want
the media knew and exposed them. Twyla argued it, and asked them to leave early
in the morning.
One
night, there was someone hit Harper. Then she saw the world dark, and darker.
When she open her eyes, some people stood around her, included Tolliver was
always tried to make her woke up. People there were not only the doctor, but
also the police in that hospital. Klavin and Stuart asked about chronological
story how it could be happen to her. That can be clearly answered on page 49:
“Yes, I said,
and I wasn’t happy with the weaknesses of my voice. “But not clearly. He was
wearing dark clothes and one of those knitted hoods. He came up out of the
darkness. He hit me on the shoulder first. And before I could get out of the
way, he hit me in the head.” I knew it was lucky I’d been dodging. The blow
hadn’t landed squarely.”
Manfred, Harper friend came to see
her. They were talked a lot in her room of that hospital. Then, Christmas
coming, Harper and Tolliver met their family from Dumpster. After felt better,
they wanted to leave Doraville in the evening.
Harper
was in Hospital, and was not get better yet.
Sheriff Rockwell still asked her the same question. Harper could not
stand with this and wanted to leave Doraville as soon as possible.
Unfortunately she still could not tell the truth. It approved on page 103:
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I
wish I could tell you who did it.”
“Oh, we’re going
to find out who done it.” He said, with out a shadow of a doubt in his voice.
“Me and Bethalynn, we got to. We got Carson here, he deserves to grow up
without being afraid.”
One
day, Tolliver and Harper went to the old place, Pine Landing Lake was about ten
miles from Doraville with Cotton family and McGrow family to vacation. It is
argued in page 105:
“The cabin at
the lake had been used by the Cotton family for forty years or more. In recent
years, the Mcgrow family had enjoy it. Parker said that at first they’d felt
like in thunders, but the surviving children of Archie Cotton were well into
their sixties and had no children of their own living in Doraville any longer.
They seemed content to let the children of their dad’s wife enjoy the old
place.”
On
the last chapter, Harper thought that Doraville was not saving for her. It felt
like déjà vu when she had to do a set of checks in the same hospital as a past
such as temperature, her scalp, and a broken arm with X-ray. Sandra Rockwell
did apologize to her. It could see in page 276:
Sandra Rokcwell
was my most suprising visitor. After we’d done the “How are you” and so forth,
she said, “I want to apologize for something.”
I
waited.
“I
knew whoever attacked you, I knew it had to be the killer. And there wasn’t a
trace of him. Or his vehicle. Turns out, Tom Almand says he parked over behind
Hair Affair and cut across the back parking lots. Then he hid behind the
Dumpster behind the motel. He was going to slash your tries, but then you came
out, and he’d brought the shovel just on the off chance”
BAB
III
CONCLUSION
Harper
and Tolliver are once again called in to investigate the disappearance of a
number of teenage boys in a small town in southern America. The grandmother of
one of the boys has called them much to the seeming annoyance and disbelief of
much of the rest of the town. However Harper, as always, proves everyone wrong
and uncovers the bodies of not just one boy but eight murdered teenagers.
I
feel like it is a good bit different to other books in this series, mainly
because the plot is more thriller-like than any before have been. You really
want to find out more about the killers and make sure they get the comeuppance
they deserve. Put plainly it's just damn exciting.
Anyway
they end the book in a pretty happy place where their relationship is concerned
and head off out of town into the sunset with no regrets so I can only presume
this romance will continue in the next book and may enjoy the last installment
as the politeness are slowly improving and I definitely enjoyed this book more than
its predecessors. We'll see.
